Swimming recap: CSU notches win in first meet of season

DENVER, Colo. -- Colorado State’s swimming and diving team traveled to the University of Denver to compete in its season opener, the DU Relays, and picked up its first win of the 2009-10 campaign Saturday at the El Pomar Natatorium.
In a competition filled with only relays, CSU garnered 488 points and captured first place in eight of the 10 events.
The first win was in the 1,500 (3x500) Freestyle relay with a time of 15 minutes, 28.81 seconds, with Jennifer Lamb, Mary Foster and Genevieve Swartz swimming.
The 300 (3x100) Backstroke and Breaststroke relays brought CSU top honors with a 2:53.32 and 3:20.09, respectively. Breann Fuller, Michelle Price and Carmen Gisella Cianci made up the Backstroke relay, while Nicole Lynch, Shaelen Quigley and Mari Anna Loftness were on the Breaststroke relay.
In the freestyle genre, CSU earned gold in the 100 (4x25) Freestyle relay, 500 (50-100-150-200) Freestyle relay and 400 (4x100) Freestyle relay. Sam Dole, Emily Molzahn, Cianci and Fuller swam the 100 Freestyle (44.23); Dole, Jennifer Muniz, Cianci and Lamb performed in the 500 Freestyle (4:38.56); Lamb, Cianci, Foster and Muniz combined to make the 400 Freestyle (3:33.07).
In the 200 Medley and 300 (3x100) Butterfly relays, the Rams finished second behind the host Pioneers in both events.
DU ended in second place with 244 points, the Mesa State Mavericks placed third with 126 points and the Adams State Grizzlies gathered 36 points in their opening meet of their inaugural season.
The Rams are back in the competition pool next week (Friday and Saturday) at the Rocky Mountain Invite in Golden, Colo.
