LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Colorado State tennis went 2-1 in doubles competition Thursday at the ITA Mountain Region Championship in Las Vegas, Nev., with the doubles team of senior Laura Neal and sophomore Caitlin Fluegge still alive in the main draw.

Neal and Fluegge will continue to play for the doubles main draw championship after a win over Rebecca Bran and Heather Davidson of Montana, 8-4. Neal and Fluegge are set to compete against UNLV’s Jana Albers and Kristina Nedeltcheva Friday.

Sophomores Lauren Mulhern and Veronika Wojakowska began their first day of doubles competition with a loss to Rebecca Berger and Alexandra Kovacs of Wyoming, 8-2, but bounced back in the backdraws to defeat Idaho State’s Amy Betis and Lisel Lewis, 8-6. Mulhern and Wojakowska will now face the Air Force team of Sarah Cassman and Christin Molina.

In singles play, Maria Perevoshchikova of Idaho withdrew from competition, moving Wojakowska to the third round of the backdraws. Wojakowska then advanced to the fourth round with a victory over Romina Nedakovic of BYU; 6-3, 7-5.

“Wojakowska’s win was a really good win against BYU,” Head Coach Jon Messick said. “She is playing well right now. I thought she played the best match since she has been here at CSU, today.”

Fluegge defeated Idaho State’s Lewis, 6-2, 6-0, but fell to Colorado’s Abbie Probert in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, eliminating her from singles competition.

Neal began Thursday’s third round the sole Ram in the main draws, but lost to UNLV’s Kristina Nedeltcheva, 6-0, 6-3. Neal will begin competition in the backdraws against Alexandra Kovacs of Wyoming Friday morning.

“I thought that even with the losses, the team played extremely well today,” Messick added. “We are looking forward to tomorrow.”
