DENVER, Colo. – The Mountain West Conference released its men’s basketball preseason media poll and all-conference team Tuesday at the league’s media day held at The Mtn. studios.
Colorado State was selected to finish eight in the league for the second consecutive season, just ahead of in-state rival Air Force. The Rams received 58 points.
BYU, one of three teams to tie for the league title a season ago, was selected to finish atop the standings, receiving an overwhelming majority, 23 of 24, of the first-place votes and tallying 215 total points.
San Diego State, the only other team to receive a first-place vote, finished second with 166 points, followed by UNLV (161), Utah (143), and New Mexico (141). CSU’s “Border War” rival, Wyoming (89) was selected to finish sixth, and TCU finished ahead of the Rams in the seventh spot.
BYU also led the way with a pair of preseason all-league selections in senior G/F Jonathan Tavernari and junior G Jimmer Fredette, who was tabbed as the preseason Player of the Year. TCU’s senior F Zvonko Buljan, San Diego State’s junior F Billy White, and UNLV’s junior guard Tre’Von Willis round out the preseason all-MWC team. SDSU and UNLV also captured preseason Newcomer and Freshman of the Year honors, respectively, with junior guard Derrick Jasper, a transfer from Kentucky, and forward Kawhi Leonard.
