FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State swim team confirmed three athletes in its 2010-11 freshman class Thursday, signing Shannon McCoy, Yana Garvey and Madeline Mastrup to National Letters of Intent. Head Coach John Mattos made the announcement.
“We had a good early signing day with some very good athletes,” said Mattos. “They will provide us with good potential to replace the graduating athletes.”
McCoy, daughter of Marzie and Peter McCoy, joins the Rams family from St. Louis, Mo., and will bring CSU a strong butterfly and backstroke specialist. Originally from San Diego, Calif., McCoy currently competes for Lafayette Senior High in Wildwood, Mo. Swimming under head coach Todd Gabel, McCoy helped Lafayette to state championships in the Medley Relay (2007) and the 400 Freestyle Relay (2009), as well as multiple top-10 honors in various state events throughout her career. McCoy’s performances also contributed to the Lancers’ triumphant 2007 Missouri state championship team.
As a Lancer athlete, McCoy has earned four varsity letters and first-team all-metro honors (St. Louis Post-Dispatch). In addition to high school competition, McCoy swims for the Rockwood Swim Club.
Garvey also joins the Rams from Mountain Vista High School in Highlands Ranch (Colo.). Another physically powerful butterfly and backstroker, she is currently among the state’s top swimmers in those strokes after finishing in the top five at the 2009 Class 5A state championships in Fort Collins.
Garvey’s freshman and first semester of her sophomore year were spent in Anchorage, Alaska, competing for Dimond High School. During her short sophomore stint, Garvey broke the 100 Backstroke state record and was an honor roll student her freshman year.
During the middle of her sophomore year, Garvey moved to ThunderRidge High School in Highlands Ranch, where she competed in the remainder of her sophomore and junior season. Garvey’s addition to the Grizzlies team made an immediate impact as she shattered the 100 Back, 200 IM, 50 Freestyle, 100 Freestyle and 100 Fly school records, along with holding captaincy during her junior year. As a club competitor, Garvey competes for Highlands Ranch Aquatics and currently owns the 100 and 200 Backstroke records.
With the Rams losing three strong backstroke athletes and two stand-out butterfliers, Mattos expects “both athletes to step in where we will lose graduating swimmers.”
Mastrup, from Saint Joseph High School in Santa Maria, Calif., is the daughter of Teresa and Niels Mastrup. To date, she has earned three varsity letters as a Knight swimmer, under head coach Seraphin Villarette. Mastrup’s hard work and dedication to the sport has earned her the honor of CIF Division IV 500 Freestyle state champion and the Knights’ 2009 MVP. Along with competing for Saint Joseph’s, Mastrup is in her eighth season on the Santa Maria Swim Club coached by Mike Ashmore.
In 2009, Mastrup was a national qualifier in the 1,650 Free and a junior national qualifier in the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle events. Mastrup also won the honor of 2008-09 club MVP and currently owns the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle records. Along with standing out in the pool, Mastrup is a three-year dean’s list and principal’s honor roll student, and was selected as part of the USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Team in 2008-09. Mastrup will contribute to the Rams’ distance genre of athletes.
“She will take the place of graduating senior Kathleen McCleary,” said Mattos.
With nine seniors leaving the Rams’ family after the 2009-10 season, the addition of McCoy, Garvey and Mastrup will give CSU the ability to pick right up where it left off, according to Mattos.
