FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The Colorado State water polo team has signed Kayla Wagner and Amber Bryan to National Letters of Intent, kicking off the early signing period. CSU coaches John Mattos and Mike Moody made the announcement Friday.
Wagner, who is graduating this spring from San Ramon Valley High School in Danville, Calif., is a strong attacker whose accolades heading into her senior season include leading the East Bay Athletic League with 82 goals. She also led her team with 41 steals and 45 assists. As a result, Wagner was named the school’s Offensive Player of the Year and received first-team EBAL and second-team North Coast all-section honors.
Wagner, who also received the NCS Scholar Athlete Award as a junior for having a GPA of 3.5 or above, looks to contribute for the Rams right away.
“Kayla is a strong attacker with good game awareness,” Moody said. “We shouldn’t miss a beat with her on the team.”
CSU expects Wagner to fill an offensive void left when Sarah Ostling and Katy Armstrong graduate after this season.
Bryan is currently a sophomore at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif. The Garden Grove, Calif., native started playing water polo at Pacifica High School, where she also swam and was a member of the JV softball team during her freshman year.
Bryan, a right-handed defender, has become important to her team this season as a set-guard, and also has experience playing on the perimeter and in sprints. Last season she medaled in seven events in swimming at the conference championships and went to the state finals to compete in three events.
CSU expects her to help a 2010-11 Rams defense that will have lost senior Kailin Custy to graduation.
“She’s a strong defender that has a lot of experience and plays for a great coach,” Moody said.
Bryan’s coach at GWC is Kyle Kopp, who was an Olympian in 1996 and 2000 as a player and has been an assistant coach for the U.S. women’s national team the past nine years.
