FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Coming off of a strong showing at the second annual Colorado State Invitational water polo tournament last weekend, the CSU Rams water polo team is looking toward this weekend's tournament in Bakersfield, Calif. with high hopes.

The Rams (3-6, 2-0 Western Water Polo Association) finished their home tournament with three victories, including two against conference opponent UC Santa Cruz. They also pushed California, the fifth-ranked team in the country, very hard. Coach Mike Moody isn't surprised.

"Our girls trained hard in the preseason," Moody said, "We've put the time in, and we've got the flow going."

CSU played a grueling five games over the two-day home tournament, and the Rams believe they got stronger because of it.

"We played tired," Moody said. "We were beat up, and we learned how to push through the pain."

Winning three games and hanging tough with a championship program like Cal has enlightened CSU to believe that it can continue to be strong this weekend.

"The biggest thing that will carry over to this weekend is our confidence level," Moody said.

After a spotty performance in their opening tournament in Michigan, the Rams' offense showed up at home, scoring an average of over 11 goals per game over the five games played. Moody believes the offensive strength won't disappear.

"It's a good inside and outside game we've created and the girls are taking to it really well," Moody said.

The Rams play two conference opponents this weekend, Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay. With two wins, the Rams can improve their record against WWPA opponents to 4-0. The Rams' current 2-0 record is already the top conference record among WWPA teams.

The Rams also have a rematch against Fresno Pacific, as well as a contest against UC Davis, who is currently ranked seventh in the country.

Hoping to leave this coming weekend feeling as good as they did following the last one is the goal for the Rams, and they know they need to take it one game at a time.

"We have our expectations and our goals," Moody said, "Our girls just need to come out and play."
