HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Colorado State men’s golf team returned to form Friday, adding a round of 277 to climb from 11th to sixth place in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate.
The team ended with rounds of 286-288-277 for a three-round total of 851 (-13).
Head Coach Jamie Bermel was happy to see the improvement.
“We hadn’t played in a tournament since October,” he said, “The guys were tentative and afraid to make mistakes, and you can’t play good golf scared. We started making our shots today and the scores reflect it.”
Zen Brown came through in the clutch with a final round of 66 to finish with his third top 10 finish of the season. Brown tied for 10th with a 210.
Bryce Hanstad also finished in the top 20. Hanstad added a 74 to his previous two rounds of 69 for a 212, which tied for 19th place.
Riley Arp moved up to a tie for 42nd after Friday’s round, shooting a 67 to finish with an even-par total of 216. Dustin Morris and Zahkai Brown both finished the tournament with a 219 to tie for 53rd place.
No. 37 Texas A&M took the team title with a three-round total of 836 while James Erkenbeck of New Mexico took individual honors with a 205.
Bermel was pleased with his team’s performance Friday, but still wanted a better fourth score. Had the team improved by one stroke, it would have had its sixth top 5 appearance in as many tournaments. Had the Rams improved two strokes, they would have been in fourth place.
Colorado State won’t return to competition until March 16-17 for the Barona Collegiate Cup in San Diego, Calif.
