ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The CSU Rams women's water polo team finished the Seawolf Splash tournament 2-2, with an 8-6 win over Cal State Monterey Bay and a tough 9-7 loss to Pacific on Sunday.
CSU (8-9, 6-0 Western Water Polo Association) was handicapped to begin the day, playing without WWPA Player of the Week Kallie Berry after she came down with the flu early in the morning. Also, the Rams had to face the weather, as the tournament was played outdoors in Rohnert Park, Calif.
"It was rainy and cold," coach Mike Moody said. "The weather was an issue."
Orsi Nadasdy led the way for the Rams against the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters with four goals. It was her second career four goal game, as she achieved the same feat against Chapman on March 7th of last year. Kailin Custy, Sarah Ostling, Katy Armstrong, and Ali Pavlik all added one goal apiece in the effort.
The game was tied at halftime, but the Rams outscored the Otters 4-2 in the second half to secure the victory. With the win, the Rams are now 2-0 against three different WWPA teams, giving them an unblemished 6-0 conference record.
The final game of the tournament for the Rams came against the Pacific Tigers, and CSU left with a 9-7 loss. The Rams led at the end of three quarters 7-6, but gave up three unanswered goals in the final frame in the defeat.
"We played well," Moody said. "We just didn't finish the game."
Armstrong picked up her first career hat-trick, and Pavlik added two more in the loss.
"Armstrong played really well," Moody said. "I'm excited about her performance today."
After finishing the weekend with two wins the Rams are now only two wins behind their win totals from last year, both overall and in conference play. CSU went 10-26 (8-5 WWPA) last year.
The Rams are off until spring break, when they will travel to Los Angeles to participate in a tournament hosted by the ninth-ranked team in the country and WWPA foe Loyola Marymount on March 14.
