FORT WORTH, Texas – Kim Mestdagh netted 17 points, while Britney Minor and Juanise Cornell also reached double-figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively, but the Colorado State women’s basketball team fell 71-59 on Saturday evening to the TCU Lady Frogs at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
After trailing by as many as 17 points early in the second half, CSU mounted a comeback thanks to a 14-0 run between the 18:48 and 15:35 marks of the second half. Mestdagh was instrumental in the run, connecting on two of her five treys during that stretch, to pull the Rams to within one score, 42-39.
"I was really pleased with it," said Head Coach Kristen Holt on the team's early second-half run. "You see what we can do, hold a team to no points and go on the run and score 14. It just disappoints you that we start out the game like we did. We gave up a layup off the tip; to me it's just mental focus. That's what we have to do to win games, and that's the goal. We're not out here to just try our best. We're out here to win games."
Following Mestdagh’s third trey to open the second half, the Rams trailed 46-42, but the Lady Frogs scored 17 of the next 20 points in the contest, to match their large lead, 62-45, and hold on for the 12-point victory.
TCU jumped out to an early lead as Emily Carter converted the first bucket of the game just 5 seconds into the contest. The Lady Frogs took a 6-0 lead before Juanise Cornell put the Rams on the board. Cornell scored CSU’s first eight points to keep the Rams in the game early, but managed just one bucket for the remainder of the game, finishing with 10 points and three rebounds.
TCU’s Helena Sverrisdottir, the third-leading scorer in the Mountain West Conference, scored 12 of her game-high 19 points within the first 7 minutes of the game, including seven points in a 9-0 Lady Frogs run that pushed the Rams’ deficit to double-digits just 5 minutes in. Rachel Rentschler (16 points) and Emily Carter (13 points) also finished in double-figures for TCU. Sverrisdottir also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.
Meghan Heimstra finished as the Rams’ leading rebounder, pulling down six boards to match her six points, while Mestdagh and Amaka Uzomah each chipped in with five rebounds.
As a team, TCU shot 46.3 percent from the field, while Colorado State mustered just 31.3 percent. The Lady Frogs also outrebounded CSU by a 41-39 margin, but the Rams turned 19 TCU turnovers into 15 points, while giving away 14 turnovers for 10 points.
The Rams return home and host the BYU Cougars on Wednesday evening at Moby Arena, the Rams’ first home game since Jan. 28. Tickets are available by calling 1-800/491-RAMS or at CSURams.com.
