FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The CSU Rams water polo team notched its first two victories of the season Saturday in impressive fashion at the Edora Pool and Ice Center on Day 1 of the CSU Invitational.
The day started early for the Rams (2-5, 1-0 Western Water Polo Association), as did the scoring. CSU routed Fresno Pacific 18-7, which included 13 goals in the first half. Four players, Sarah Ostling, Emily Chambers, Orsi Nadasdy, and Ali Pavlik, all tallied hat tricks for the Rams. Pavlik's three goals all came in the first half.
"She took the team on her shoulders in terms of scoring," assistant coach Mike Moody said.
The first victory of any season is always important, and it felt good for the Rams to get it.
"It's always a good feeling," Moody said. "It's a big deal."
Later in the day, the Rams were able to achieve another first: their first conference victory of 2009, by beating UC Santa Cruz, 13-9. Another offensive onslaught led the Rams to victory, as well as some solid goaltending by Kayley Provow. Provow recorded 16 saves in the game, including six in the final frame. Her 16 total saves tied the school's single-game record.
"Provow is a great, talented goalie," Moody said. "That was probably the best game I have seen her play."
Ostling scored five goals for the Rams, and both Kallie Berry and Pavlik also had hat tricks. It was Berry's first hat trick of her career.
The Rams ended the evening playing the nation's fifth-ranked team, the California Golden Bears. The Rams stuck with them, but ended up losing 20-9. Kailin Custy, Pavlik, and Berry all had two goals apiece, and Provow finished with 10 saves. Even in the loss, the Rams showed a lot of heart during all four quarters.
"Hands down, we played great against Cal," Moody said. "We pushed Cal. We made them play."
The Rams will continue action Sunday at 9 a.m., when they will take UC Santa Cruz. If CSU wins, it will take on the winner of Cal and Fresno Pacific, at 1:30 p.m. in the tournament championship. All afternoon game times Sunday are subject to change due to travel arrangements.
