LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 8-seeded Colorado State women’s basketball team gave No. 4 New Mexico all that it could handle on Wednesday evening in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Conoco MWC championships, as the Rams battled to within three points of the defending champs with less than 5 minutes remaining in the contest.
However, a 13-2 Lobos run between the 4:41 and 1:33 marks of the second half propelled UNM (22-9) to a 62-48 victory, and into Friday’s semifinal round for a matchup with the top-seeded Utah Utes.
The Rams (10-21) led for much of the opening half behind strong three-point shooting performances by sophomore Bonnie Barbee, freshman Kim Mestdagh and senior Kandy Beemer. During a 12-2 Rams run that saw CSU take over its first lead, Mestdagh and Barbee each hit a trey, while Beemer added a pair from long distance, and the Rams held a 13-9 advantage with 13:30 remaining in the first half.
New Mexico bounced back and took a 25-22 advantage into the locker room, and despite being held without a field goal for the final 3:19 of the first half, and the opening 2:30 of the second half, the Lobos pushed their lead to five points midway through the closing stanza.
A pair of Zoi Simmons free throws pulled the Rams to within three points, 46-43, with 5:47 remaining, but UNM’s Amy Beggin scored 13 points over the final 4:41 as part of the Lobos’ 16-5 run to end the contest.
Barbee led the Rams with 12 points in the contest, while Mestdagh added nine points, five rebounds and three steals in 25 minutes of action. Senior Amaka Uzomah chipped in with a team-high 10 rebounds, her fourth double-digit rebounding performance in five career MWC tournament games.
Beggin, who led all scorers, recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Angela Hartill added 18 points and Amanda Best chipped in with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds for UNM.
