Rams topple San Bernardino on final day of LMU tournament

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Katy Armstrong's fourth-quarter goal sent Colorado State to a 10-8 conference win over Cal State San Bernardino Sunday morning at the Loyola Marymount Invitational, at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center.
The Rams (9-12, 7-2 Western Water Polo Association) wound up splitting the day, losing later in the afternoon to conference foe Sonoma State, 13-7, to finish the tournament 1-3.
Armstrong's key goal snapped an 8-8 tie with 2 minutes, 32 seconds left in regulation, and CSU's defense clamped down to preserve the Rams' only win of the weekend.
"Katy had another great tournament this weekend," coach Mike Moody said. "She played solid all weekend long. She's a smart player, she knows what she needs to do, and she was in the right place at the right time to score that goal."
The win over CSUSB (6-10) also avenged a tough 8-6 loss in the teams' only meeting last season.
"I can't remember the last time we defeated San Bernardino," Moody said. "They've become a good rivalry for us."
Kallie Berry and Emily Chambers each posted hat tricks in the victory, while Ali Pavlik tallied a pair of goals, including an important insurance score following Armstrong's goal late in the fourth period.
CSU's tournament finale started out well for the Rams, who led 6-4 at halftime. But Sonoma State (6-9) scored 10 unanswered goals, over a 14-minute stretch that began just before intermission, to cement its 13-7 win.
"We came out those first two periods and played really, really well," Moody said. "I couldn't have been happier."
Until two of his starters, Kailin Custy and Orsi Nadasdy, fouled out in the third period, leaving a gaping hole in the Rams' lineup.
"Then we couldn't buy a shot," Moody said. "We couldn't have done a better job in that first half, but we didn't finish. We've got to play four periods that way, and not just two."
Colorado State will spend the week in southern California, traveling about an hour south to Huntington Beach for a spring break training camp at Golden West Community College. They'll commute north to Riverside, Calif., on Thursday night.
The Rams and Cal State San Bernardino will square off in a rematch Friday on the first day at the Cal Baptist tournament in Riverside, Calif. CSU also meets Wagner on Friday, before taking on Redlands and Cal Baptist on Saturday to conclude its 2009 spring break trip.
