PROVO, Utah – The CSU men’s golf team shot up the ranks in its second day at the 2009 Ping Cougar Classic Saturday morning.
Head Coach Jamie Bermel’s squad began the day in fifth place and after carding an 11-under-par team round of 277 finished in second with a total of 851 (-13). The Rams fell nine strokes shy of tournament champion and host BYU.
Riley Arp shot his season-low round Saturday with a 65. The tournament-low round was enough to move Arp into sole possession of fourth place with a 207 (-9). Arp finished just two strokes behind Southern Utah’s Matt McArthur, who claimed individual honors despite an even-par closing round on Saturday.
Dustin Morris had another below-par round and finished with a three-round total of 211 for a share of eighth place. That will further lower his conference-leading stroke average.
Zen Brown shot a 70 Saturday to finish in a tie for 14th place with 214 strokes. His finish Saturday tied Brown with Nolan Martin for the fourth most career top-20 finishes in CSU history.
Bryce Hanstad and Ryan Peterson rounded out the team with even-par rounds of 72 to tie for 34th with three-round totals of 221.
Zahkai Brown finished in 10th competing as an individual. He shot a 70 to finish with a 212.
The Rams’ next tournament will be the MWC championships in Tucson, Ariz., Thursday-Saturday. They will look to repeat as Mountain West champions and tie BYU’s conference record of six team titles in the season.
