LARAMIE, Wyo. – In the first completed action at the Mountain West Conference track and field championships Thursday, the CSU women’s team saw Kristen Kugler place third in the heptathlon, a promising start as the women look to repeat as MWC champions.

Kugler, a junior, improved on an eighth-place finish last year, finishing the event with 4,497 points. She was very impressive in the throwing portions of the competition, putting up the best scores in the shot put and the javelin.

“It is fantastic way to start,” said CSU assistant coach Tim Cawley. “We had two good days and both athletes competed very well, setting a few personal records.”

Freshman Sophia Wagner also scored points for the Rams, with a sixth-place finish. The two earned the Rams’ nine points, placing CSU second in the competition after the first event.

“It feels really good to be able to go out and set a good base for the rest of the team to build on by having a good first day,” said Kugler.

Brigham Young’s Amy Menlove captured first place in the competition (5,325 points) and Kugler narrowly finished behind TCU’s Meaghan Peoples, who took second (5,060). BYU leads the team competition with 15 points.

The meet continues Friday and Saturday with a full-slate of action on each day.
