TUCSON, Ariz. – The Colorado State men’s golf team was unable to repeat as Mountain West champions this season after a 7-over-par outing to wrap up the MWC championship in Tucson Saturday.
The Rams finished with a three-round total of 854 (+2), 10 strokes behind tournament title winner TCU, who won the team playoff against San Diego State to secure the 2009 MWC men's golf championship.
Head Coach Jamie Bermel said the Rams just couldn’t capitalize on the momentum they’d built Friday.
“I’m extremely disappointed we didn’t play better today,” Bermel said, “We were in a great spot. It was a little breezy today but we just didn’t do what we needed to do.”
Zahkai Brown had the lowest round of the day for the Rams. Brown’s 69 was enough to move him into a tie for 11th place with a 213 on the tournament, nine strokes behind Steve Saunders of New Mexico, who took home individual honors with a three-round total of 204, the new Mountain West record for the tournament.
After a 66 Friday, Zen Brown carded a 76 Saturday to slip to 16th place with a tournament total of 215.
Riley Arp shot a 74 in his closing round to finish in 24th place while Bryce Hanstad was one stroke away, carding a 218 for the tournament for a share of 27th place.
Dustin Morris remained in 30th place Saturday after a round of 72 for a three-round total of 219.
Hopeful and optimistic, the team now awaits word on whether its season will continue. The NCAA will announce its regional-qualifying teams early next week.
