TUCSON, Ariz. – The Mountain West Conference announced its 2008-09 men’s golf all-conference team and individual awards at the conclusion of its championship Saturday at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Course. Among the honorees were three Colorado State golfers.
Zahkai Brown was named Freshman of the Year. Brown is the first Colorado State golfer to capture MWC Freshman of the Year accolades in the 10-year history of the league. He has competed in nine tournaments this year, maintaining a 71.48 stroke average with a low round of 63, which tied the school record. Brown took home individual honors at the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif., this fall where he led the Rams to a team title.
Senior Zen Brown and junior Dustin Morris were named to the 2008-09 MWC all-conference team.
Brown carries a 71.58 stroke average after 11 tournaments this season. He had three top 10 appearances and moved into fourth in CSU history with 25 career top 20 finishes.
Morris led the conference in stroke average, currently holding a 71.21 average through 11 tournaments and posting five top 10 finishes. Morris claimed his second career individual title this March in Lakeside, Calif., at the Barona Collegiate Invitational where he led the Rams to their fifth team title this season. He was also named Golf World college player of the week for his performance in Lakeside.
The Rams finished fifth at the MWC championships Saturday and await the announcement of the NCAA regional-qualifying teams early next week.
