FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Katy Armstrong, a junior attacker on CSU's women's water polo team who scored 14 goals during the team's best season in program history, has been nominated to represent the school at the NCAA National Student Athlete Development Conference in Orlando, Fla. May 24 through 27.

Armstrong, who is the head of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at CSU, was chosen among the around 400 student athletes the school boasts. Being selected is a huge honor for Armstrong.

"I was so excited and honored to have been chosen," Armstrong said. "I knew I had been nominated but wasn't expecting to be selected."

Angela Wyss, the academic coordinator in CSU's athletics department, believes Armstrong was the appropriate choice.

"She's a perfect representative," Wyss said. "She's a good student and active in the community. She's very well-rounded."

The conference is held every year and is a great way for schools across the country from Division 1 to Division 3 to be able to discuss and learn from one another. It is meant to help spread new ideas across the country in order to improve NCAA athletics both inside and out of sports. Wyss thinks it is a great chance for CSU to learn and evolve.

"She can bring back what other schools are doing that we aren't," Wyss said. "She can also share her experience with schools that might not have what we have."

Armstrong agrees, and is hoping to find new ways to get CSU's student-athletes involved in the community.

"I hope to come back from this conference with stronger leadership skills that can help to make athletes more involved on campus," Armstrong said. "Athletics is such an important part of a college campus and I feel athletes should give back to the campus and the community that supports them.

Specifically, Armstrong wants to help improve CSU's SAAC.

"I would like to bring back ways that other universities' SAACs have become involved within their campuses," Armstrong said. "Our SAAC has the potential to be an important part of not only the athletic department but also the CSU campus and I would like to learn strategies to creating that kind of success."

The experience of attending the conference is huge for Armstrong and for the school, and is a big chance to learn, and also to teach others. Wyss has confidence that Armstrong will be good at both.

"I'm confident she'll represent us well," Wyss said. "And make us look good."
