TULSA, Okla. -- Senior CSU golfers Dustin Morris and Bryce Hanstad, and junior Ryan Peterson, have qualified for the 2009 U.S. Amateur that will take place on Aug. 24-30.
They will be joined by 309 amateurs from across the country to play in the oldest golf championship in the U.S. which began in 1895. The early rounds of the tournament will be played at the Southern Hills and Cedar Ridge golf courses before moving to Southern Hills exclusively.
"I'm extremely happy for all three guys," said men's golf Coach Jamie Bermel. "This is the first time in the history of the program that we have three Colorado State University golfers at the U.S. Amateur in the same year. Last year we had two, Zen and Zahkai Brown. I know all three guys will represent the team very well."
Morris, of Crosby, Texas, finished second in the Mountain West Conference in stroke average last season with 71.61, just .01 behind the leader Eddie Olson from UNLV. His top finish was first place at the Barona Collegiate Cup.
Hanstad, of Alexandria, Minn., shot a low round 65 twice last season, at the Del Walker Intercollegiate and the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational. He had a top finish at first place in the season opener at the Gene Miranda Invitational.
Peterson, of Eagan, Minn., had his top finish in the Barona Collegiate Cup, where he shot a season low round of 68 and finished tied for 11th. His stroke average of 73.07 is 18th best in the Mountain West Conference.
The field will be narrowed down to 64 players after the first two days of the tournament. Television coverage will be broadcast on The Golf Channel beginning on Day 3, Aug. 26, from 2-4 p.m. MT. Check your local listings for additional television coverage.
