BERLIN, Germany -- Former CSU track and field standout Casey Malone finished fifth in the men's discus at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin, Germany, Wednesday.
His best throw of 66.06 meters came on his sixth and final attempt in the finals.
"(It was) truly an incredible competition to be a part of," Malone said. "I'm happy with happy with how I did. That's my farthest throw in a World Championship competition."
Malone's Discus Throw Attempts
1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 6th |
63.61 | 61.59 | 65.64 | 64.84 | 65.98 | 66.06 |
"This is Casey's highest finish at a world championship final," said CSU track and field Head Coach Brian Bedard. "I watched his throws and was extremely proud of the way he competed at one of track and field's most competitive meets. Casey went over to Germany with a mindset of competing for a medal and I think he put himself in a position to do just that.
"To watch him execute his technique just like his practices here in Fort Collins, with the pressure on, is a real testament to his competitive ability. It's been a pleasure to coach Casey over the last 14 years and watch him improve and continue to be successful at a world-class level."
Malone, out of Wheat Ridge, Colo., finished ninth in the world championships in 2003. Malone was a four-time All-American and NCAA champion for the Rams. He won the USA championships in June and is currently ranked No. 1 in the United States.
