Rams claim inaugural Colorado Cup

HOLYOKE, Colo. - In the inaugural Colorado Cup, a Ryder Cup-style showdown between the Colorado Buffaloes and the Colorado State Rams, the Rams outscored the Buffs in the four-ball matches and the singles matches to claim the competition Sunday.
The schools split the four-ball matches, played Sunday morning, two points to one, claimed by CSU. While seniors Dustin Morris and Bryce Hanstad dropped their match against Justin Bardgett and Sebastian Heisele, the Rams teams of Riley Arp and Zahkai Brown, and Sean McNamera and Ryan Peterson claimed the next two matches to go up 2-1.
The singles matches began in the afternoon. The Buffs quickly recaptured a 4-2 lead by defeating Brown, McNamera and sophomore Kory Harrell. It would be all Rams from that point. With Rams victories coming from Hanstad (5 and 4), Morris (4 and 3), Peterson (2 and 1) and Arp (1 up), CSU secured the first Colorado Cup 6-4.
Head Coach Jamie Bermel thought this opening win was "a great way to start the season."
"It came down to the last match," Bermel explained. "We were up five to four when Riley Arp made a 15-footer on 17 to secure the cup. It was exciting. It came down to the last match. It could have gone either way and we feel pretty fortunate to come out on top."
Colorado State will now look toward their next tournament, the Topy Cup, Sept. 8-10 in Tanagura, Japan.
