TANAGURA, Japan – After beginning the final day of competition in a tie with Texas, the CSU men’s golf team finished six strokes ahead of the Longhorns to claim third place in the Topy Cup.

The Rams finished with an even-par 864, four strokes behind Tohoku Fukushi and eight strokes behind first-place Washington, only the second American school in the last six years to win the cup. Yoshinori Fujimoto of Tohoku Fukushi took individual honors with a 9-under-par performance.

CSU’s Zahkai Brown and Riley Arp earned their first top 10 finishes of the year. Brown finished the tournament by shooting a 5-under-par on the back nine to finish in a tie for third with a 213 (-3). Arp fired rounds of 74, 70 and 70 to finish in fifth, one stroke behind Brown.

Dustin Morris, even-par coming into Thursday, finished with a 2-over-par 218 for a share of 12th place. Bryce Hanstad also notched a top 20 performance, recovering from a 77 on his second round to card a 2-under-par 70 Thursday to tie for 20th. Sean McNamara finished in a tie for 45th with a 231 in his return to collegiate tournament action after not competing last year.

Head Coach Jamie Bermel shared his thoughts on the team’s 5-under-par round Thursday.

"I thought we had a solid round today,” Bermel said. “Zahkai had a great back nine, shooting a 31, and really helped the team.  Overall, we just played a little loose at times, and that hurt our chances of winning.  I am certain we could find eight strokes in three rounds where we made silly mistakes and hopefully we can correct that for next week at Air Force.”

The Rams will now come home and have a week to prepare for their title defense at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational Sept. 19-20 in Colorado Springs.
