Tennis recap: CSU completes Day 1 of BYU Invitational

PROVO, Utah – The Colorado State tennis team kicked off its 2009-10 season and concluded its first day of competition in the BYU Invitational Thursday afternoon with three sophomores receiving their first victories of the 2009-10 season.
“I thought in general we played well,” Head Coach Jon Messick said. “Our players lower in the lineup were competing against other competitors higher in the lineup. That’s what we wanted and it was good experience for them”
Sophomores Tori Arneson and Veronika Wojakowska both came out strong in the first round of the A singles bracket. Wojakowska earned her first victory in a Rams uniform by defeating Taylor Perry of Utah State, 7-5, 6-1, but lost to McCall Jones of BYU, 6-0, 6-2. Arneson also fell in the second round to Megan Price of BYU, 6-1, 6-0, after her first-round win over Jaclyn West of Utah State, 6-3, 6-3.
“Wojakowska playing BYU’s No. 1 was good experience for her,” Messick added. “In the second set she held her own.”
Competing in the B singles bracket, sophomore Lauren Mulhern defeated Brittiny Moore of Weber State in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, to earn her first win since March 28. Mulhern would later fall in the second round to Paloma Navarro of Wyoming, 6-3, 6-2.
Senior Laura Neal, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, received a first-round bye in the A singles bracket. Neal fell to Erin Monson of Utah, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, in her first match of the day in the second round of competition.
Senior Kirsten Stople and junior Caitlin Fluegge were defeated in their first rounds of the A singles, and senior Rui Xu fell in her first round of the B singles.
Stople and Mulhern began doubles competition on a good note with a win over the Utah State team, Taylor Perry and Carla Limon, 8-5, but lost in the second round to BYU’s Christina Doerr and Romina Nedakovic, 8-4
Play will resume Friday morning.
