PROVO, Utah – In its first meet back after a month-long competition break, the Colorado State swimming and diving team just didn’t have enough top performances to topple BYU, the defending conference champions.
The Rams (5-1, 4-1 Mountain West) lost their first conference dual of the season, to the Cougars 189.5-110.5 Friday night in the Stephen L. Richards Building.
Putting up a good fight, the Rams earned nearly all of their points from second-, third- and fourth-place finishes. However, there were three events in which the Rams took top honors. The 27 first-place points came from Carmen Gisella Cianci, Breann Fuller and Nicole Lynch.
Prior to the meet, Head Coach John Mattos commented that he thought Cianci would surprise competitors by coming out of the break in strong fashion. She did just that as she scored the first individual nine points for the team with a time of 1 minute and 53.71 seconds in the 200 Freestyle.
Fuller, the Rams’ top backstroker, continued to rack up points for the team. Her time of 56.24 was just enough to edge out BYU’s Candice Smith by 23-hundreths of a second and grab the gold in the 100 Backstroke. Fuller and Smith would flip glories later in the meet during in the 200 Back when Smith clocked in fourth-tenths of a second ahead of Fuller.
Lynch grabbed nine of her 16 individual points after finishing first in the 200 Breaststroke. Lynch’s win was a fingertip finish as she raced to a 2:22.58 time while the Cougars’ Londyn Clawson recorded a 2:22.60.
CSU will have its opportunity to bounce right back when it travels up the road to face the Utah Utes on Saturday. Competition begins at the Ute Natatorium at 3 p.m.
