MACON, Ga. – After three days of action at the Brickyard at Riverside, the Colorado State men’s golf team placed 12th in the Brickyard Collegiate.

The 2009 SEC champion Georgia Bulldogs paced the 15-team field, finishing first with a 7-under-par 857.

The Rams (+28) were unable to record one round below par in the tournament for the first time in over a year (GolfWeek Preview, Sept. 27-28, 2009). Ryan Peterson and Zahkai Brown were the only two Rams to post rounds of par in the three-day tournament.

Head Coach Jamie Bermel offered some insight into the weekend.

“Unfortunately we played pretty solid but we couldn’t putt the greens,” said Bermel. “No one could read the Bermuda greens or make any putts and obviously our score showed.”

Peterson carded an even-par 72 Sunday. He shot pars on his first 16 holes, then bogeyed his 17th and birdied his 18th. Peterson led the Rams this weekend with a 221 (+5). He finished in a tie for 33rd place.

Brown’s round of 72 came on Friday. He struggled in Round 2, recording seven holes over par. Returning to form on Sunday, Brown shot a 74 including a birdie of Hole 4 to finish in 39th place with a three-round total of 223.

Also finishing in 39th place, Kory Harrell looked to be off to a great start Sunday with two birdies in his first three holes, but finished with a 73.

Kirby Pettitt and Steve Sorenson rounded out the team, tying for 68th in the 84-man field. Pettitt fired a 75 Sunday while Sorenson shot a 77.

Russell Henley of Georgia claimed medalist honors with a 10-under-par 206. Complete results are available on golfstat.com.

Though frustrated, Bermel is hoping to move forward from this outing.

“I’m disappointed but hopefully we can get back and regroup and be ready for our next tournament in California,” said Bermel.

The Rams will have a week to regroup before they tee off at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational in Berkeley, Calif., Oct. 18. The two-day tournament is the last on the Rams’ fall schedule.
