FORT COLLINS, Colo.— The Colorado State men’s basketball program announced Wednesday the addition of two walk-ons to the 2010-11 roster.
Terel Hughes and Kaipo Sabas, both juniors, will join the team immediately, and are already household names among Ram fans. Both players’ fathers, Eddie Hughes and Barry Sabas, donned the Green and Gold during their playing days.
The younger Hughes will join the Rams after one season at Otero Junior College in La Junta, Colo. The 5-10 guard, originally from Colorado Springs, Colo., is majoring in economics at CSU, where he also works as an intramurals sports manager at the rec center on campus. In high school, he was a two-year letterwinner for 4A Harrison High School. He was named as a team captain and led the Panthers to the state semifinals during his senior season. Both of his parents, Eddie and Bregitta Hughes, are CSU graduates. He also has two brothers, Trumaine, 23, and Turray, 14.
Sabas (pronounced KY-poh suh-BASS) is a Fort Collins native, having graduated from Rocky Mountain High School in 2008. As a Lobo, he earned first-team all-conference honors, in addition to being a two-year captain and leading Rocky Mountain to three consecutive Front Range League titles (2006-08). The 5-11 guard then spent two seasons at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyo., where he earned his associates of arts degree in May 2010, while also collecting academic All-America honors. During two seasons in Wyoming, Sabas averaged more than 8 points per contest, and as a sophomore, shot 90 percent (78-of-87) from the free-throw line and pulled down 2.8 rebounds a game.
Sabas comes to CSU as a restaurant and resort management major with a minor in business administration. He is the son of Barry and Mary Sabas, and has one brother, Keoni, and two sisters, Kiana Barber and Mililani. Barber played basketball at Otero Junior College and Black Hills State.
Hughes’ father, Eddie, was a four-time letterwinner at CSU from 1979-82, and went on the play professional basketball for the Utah Jazz and Denver Nuggets. During his illustrious career at CSU, he became the first Ram to ever be selected first-team all-Western Athletic Conference as a freshman. He was a three-time all-conference selection and was named to several All-America teams before being inducted to the CSU Hall of Fame. He still holds several spots in CSU’s record book, including scoring (1,360 career points, seventh all-time), assists (366, sixth), field goals made (566, fifth), steals (112, fourth), steals in a game (eight, tied for first) and freshman scoring average (15.4 points, first).
Sabas’ father, Barry, spent two seasons in a Rams uniform, earning second-team all-WAC honors and the 1975 WAC Newcomer of the Year award. During his junior campaign, his first at CSU, he led the Rams in scoring with 14.2 points per game. In his two-year career, the guard averaged 13.9 points and was considered “one of the best back-court men” Jim Williams, CSU’s all-time winningest coach, had ever coached.
The two additions round out the 16-man roster as the Rams enter into the 2010-11 season, which begins Tuesday with an exhibition contest against Regis. For ticket information, call 1-800/491-RAMS or visit CSURams.com/tickets.
