Tennis recap: CSU concludes match play at AFA Invitational

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Colorado State tennis team concluded its final day of play at the Air Force Invitational Sunday with three top players missing from its roster and an injury suffered by senior Caitlin Fluegge.
Even though the Rams only brought home five victories in 25 matches played, the competition was noteworthy. With matches against nationally ranked players like Oregon's Paulina Smatova, and teams such as Oklahoma State (ranked No. 62), the Rams were able to compete at a higher level, which will help them prepare for the ITA Central Region Championships that will be played next week.
In the singles Flight 1 back draw Sunday, Fluegge fell to Arizona’s Sarah Landsman due to an injury suffered during match play. Fluegge was 0-3 in singles throughout the tournament and 1-3 in doubles with partner, Veronika Wojakowska.
In the back draw of the singles Flight 3, Wojakowska encountered her second loss of the tournament when she fell to Kristin Eggleston from New Mexico, 3-6, 4-6. Wojakowska has a tournament record of 1-2 in singles and holds a record of 4-2 in her last six matches.
In Flight 4 of the singles back draw, Lauren Pick came out with a win after defeating New Mexico’s Ashley Bonner by default. In Flight 5 of the singles back draw, Northern Colorado’s Alexis Filliol defeated Kaitlin Wooldridge in straight sets, 3-6, 2-6.
In doubles, Colorado State saw only one match played Sunday morning. In Flight 1 of the doubles back draw, Fluegge and Wooldridge put up a fight against Oklahoma State’s Malika Rose and Alisa Buslaieva, but were defeated 4-8.
The Rams will return to the court Oct. 13-17 at the ITA Central Region Championships in Las Vegas, Nev.
