COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- CSU defensive end Broderick Sargent is among three Mountain West Conference football student-athletes nominated for the inaugural Burlsworth Trophy, the conference announced Tuesday.

Sargent joins BYU’s Andrew Rich and Utah’s Joe Phillips among 45 candidates for the award, which is presented to a collegiate player that began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field.

A product of Chesterfield, Mo., Sargent registered 6.5 tackles for loss (-18 yards) and two sacks (-10 yards) this season for the Rams. In 11 games, Sargent also tallied 37 tackles and a fumble recovery. He also earned the inaugural Keli S. McGregor Memorial Scholarship.

Nominees for the award, which is named after former Arkansas walk-on and All-American offensive lineman Brandon Burlsworth, must have began their first season of participation with a Division I Football Bowl Subdivision program without financial aid from their athletic department.

Without one Division 1 scholarship offer, Burlsworth walked on to the Razorback team in 1994, worked his way to being a three-year starter and was eventually named an All-American in 1998. He was selected as the 63rd overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 1999 NFL draft, but was tragically killed in a car accident 11 days later. The Burlsworth Foundation was created in his memory and supports the physical and spiritual needs of children, in particular those children that have limited opportunities.

Finalists for the Burlsworth Trophy will be named on Dec. 1 with the winner announced on Dec. 15. A banquet will be held in honor of the winner on Feb. 7, 2011 in Springdale, Ark. hosted by the Springdale Rotary Club.
