DENVER, Colo. -- Colorado State's swimming and diving team lost a tough meet Friday night to Denver, 180-120, at the El Pomar Natatorium.

The Rams fought hard throughout the meet, finishing first in seven events, but it was not enough to pull out a win.

Head Coach John Mattos reflected on his team's performance.

"We performed at the level that we were supposed to perform at," he said. "We improved in a lot of areas, we had a lot of outstanding performances and I was surprised with a lot of our times. DU just really didn't want to lose to us; they were much more prepared for this dual meet. But I'm very proud of our kids."

Jennifer Lamb, a junior from Cypress, Texas, had an excellent effort in the 200 and 500 Freestyle events, earning first place in both with times of 1 minute, 53.47 seconds, and 5:05.94, respectively. Her time in the 200 Free was her best this season by almost a full second.

"J-Lamb continues to shine in the Freestyle events," Mattos said. "She's really coming along."

Lamb was not alone in first-place finishes in the lanes. Breann Fuller (100 Back), Samantha Dole (50 Free) and Yana Garvey (200 Back) all pulled out first-place times in their individual events.

Meanwhile, over on the boards, Shayna Solomon, a junior from Huntington Beach, Calif., excelled in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, scoring 277.28 and 270.15 points.

"Shayna continues to do well on both boards," Mattos said. "She's been extremely consistent for us. We do have a young diving team, but I'm pleased with the way she could stand out."

On Saturday at 11 a.m. the Rams will face their toughest competition yet against California, last year's No. 5-ranked team. The meet at Moby Pool, on the CSU campus is free.

Mattos has high hopes that the Rams will be able to perform well against a team of California's caliber.

"California will be a test of our resilience tomorrow," he said, "and we'll try to hold our own against them in certain events. We swam tonight in Denver and then will turn around and swim the next day in hopes that we can progress in performance."
