This week's notable storylines...

  • CSU has an opportunity to finish ahead of the Cougars in the league standings for the first time since 2003, when the Rams (4-3 in MWC) last defeated BYU (3-4). The Rams haven't knocked off the Cougars in Fort Collins since 2002. It's the first time in five years that CSU has met a BYU squad that wasn't at least receiving votes in the national polls.
  • The contest is the last in the forseeable future between the two programs, which have met 68 times, since their first meeting in 1922, when the programs were first together in a league, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. BYU will become an FBS independent in 2011.
  • Two true freshmen quarterbacks -- BYU's Jake Heaps and CSU's Pete Thomas -- are expected to start, the nation's third such game this year, and third within a nine-day stretch (UCF at Houston last Friday, and BC at Wake Forest Saturday).
  • Thomas, a Freshman All-America candidate, leads the nation in his class with a 66.1 percent completion percentage. That mark ranks 20th in the nation overall, but third among those with at least 316 attempts, behind Brandon Weeden (OSU) and Landry Jones (OU).
  • Saturday is the final Fort Collins game for CSU's 16 seniors.
  • The Rams have an opportunity to finish with a 4-1 home record, their best mark since 2005, and tie their fourth-best winning percentage at Hughes Stadium (1968).
  • CSU looks to avenge a 45-42 loss to the Cougars the last time BYU made the Fort Collins trek. In that contest, Joey Porter and Gartrell Johnson engaged in a spontaneous chest bump.
