NEWPORT COAST, Calif. - Led by junior Ryan Peterson, the Colorado State men's golf team shot a 1-under-par team total Tuesday to move up and finish seventh at the Battle at the Beach.

Peterson concluded the tournament with a 67, his career-low at the collegiate level. He finished in a tie for sixth place among individuals, also a personal best.

The Rams finished seventh in the field of 14 teams, amid some of the toughest competition they will face all year. Claiming the top spot was host No. 15 UCLA with a 10-under-par, three-round total. Peterson shot six birdies Tuesday to come up only two strokes out of first place, shared by David Lingmerth of Arkansas and Chris Williams of Washington.

Head Coach Jamie Bermel was extremely pleased to see Peterson perform so well.

"Ryan played really well which was good to see," said Bermel. "He is a junior and just hadn't quite gotten over the hump until this tournament. It was a good field and he played very well. It was a good start to the spring. There were some good teams out there. Most had played at least once already this spring. Hopefully we'll keep this momentum growing throughout the spring."

Seniors Riley Arp and Dustin Morris fired even-par rounds to notch top-20 performances. Arp placed 14th, capping a remarkable recovery from an over-par Day 1. Morris was par on the tournament for a share of 19th and his 22nd career top-20 finish - only two away from tying Nolan Martin for fifth in CSU history.

After coming in 4-over-par on Monday, Bryce Hanstad came back with a 69 Tuesday and was only one stroke away from a top-20 finish as well. Hanstad's round was highlighted by a hole-in-one on Hole 6. Rounding out the day, Zahkai Brown and Sean McNamara fired a 76 and 79, respectively.

The Rams will have a month of practice before their next tournament, the NIT in Tucson, Ariz., March 17-18.
