FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The CSU women's water polo team learned Thursday of its playoff outlook. The Rams have garnered the sixth seed for the Western Water Polo Association conference tournament for the second consecutive season.
April 30 marks the start of the action for all teams in the tournament, and CSU (10-16, 5-5 WWPA) will play Cal State East Bay (21-11, 9-3 WWPA) first. On Valentine's Day, the Rams dropped their only meeting with East Bay of the season, 8-7. The game was tied at halftime, but East Bay's 2-1 scoring edge in the third quarter proved to be the deciding factor.
The closeness of the previous meeting has coach Mike Moody excited and hopeful. "East Bay has done a great job this year," Moody said. "Their coach, Lisa Cooper, has done a great job. They are a talented group of girls and they've had an extraordinary season.
"The game we played earlier in the season went down to the last period, and they ended up on the winning side. We feel confident going into this game."
Moody says that East Bay tries to get its opponents into foul trouble, and that the Rams will have to play intelligently to try to counter that strategy.
The Rams beat East Bay twice last season, by scores of 12-11 and 10-6.
If the Rams beat East Bay, they will face the winner of the No. 18 UC San Diego - Sonoma State/Chapman game. CSU defeated both Chapman and UC San Diego this season. The win over UC San Diego was the Rams' first ever against a ranked opponent. CSU did not play Sonoma State this year.
