PROVO, Utah - In their last action before postseason play, the Colorado State Rams turned in a round of 7-under-par to stave off the BYU Cougars by two strokes and claim their third team title of the 2009-10 season.
Leading the CSU effort was Bryce Hanstad, who after a 7-under-par effort of his own in two rounds Friday, coasted to a share of fourth place Saturday by shooting an even-par round. Hanstad was three strokes off individual champion Jared Belcher of Nevada.
Riley Arp went 3-under-par Saturday, the Rams' best round of the day, to move up to eighth place with a 213. Dustin Morris also tallied a top-10 performance with rounds of 71-72-71 for a tie in 10th place. Zahkai Brown also made a top-20 appearance, finishing two strokes behind Morris in 20th.
Ryan Peterson, while struggling Friday, came back to give the team a 2-under-par 70, which was enough to edge host BYU for the title by two strokes.
This was the Rams' first win at the Cougar Classic since 2004 when they finished their streak of three-in-a-row. The win comes over five other Mountain West opponents (BYU, UNLV, Air Force, Wyoming, and Utah) and No. 3 August State.
The Rams will be back in action May 5-6 at the MWC championship tournament where they will look to reclaim the conference title from 2009 champion TCU.
