FORT COLLINS, Colo.--Colorado State will host the Front Range Classic this Saturday, with just two meets left before the MWC championships, and some of the distance runners will head to the University of Oregon for the Oregon Relays.
The Front Range Classic will begin Saturday with the first event at 9 a.m., with the men's hammer weigh-ins beginning at 8 a.m. The teams to compete include University of Colorado, Air Force Academy, University of Northern Colorado and Wyoming. This is a scored meet with a traveling trophy going to the winner of both the men's and women's competition. The CSU women have dominated the meet in the past while the Air Force men have taken the trophy home more than any other team in the meet.
"I see this meet as another opportunity for our athletes to move up in the conference standings in order to earn a spot on the MWC team," said Head Coach Brian Bedard. "Some of our athletes have already secured a spot on the 28-person conference team but are trying to move up the NCAA west descending order list to earn a shot at the NCAA qualifying meet.
"This is always a good rivalry meet. Unfortunately this is CU's finals week and that will limit the number of athletes they can bring to the meet and will hurt their chances for a team title."
Assistant coach Bryan Berryhill will be taking six athletes to the Oregon Relays, trying to get the distance squad another low-altitude race opportunity.
The athletes to compete include Nicole Peters (steeplechase), Jake Keyser (steeplechase), Spenser Lynass (steeplechase), Daniel Wallis (10,000-meter run), Ryan Friese (800-meter run) and Nigel Joseph (400-meter hurdles).
