CHANDLER, Ariz. - The Colorado State women's golf team finished in third place at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Tuesday at the Ocotillo Golf Club.

The Rams posted a team score of 294 (+6) for the first round, 312 (+24) for the second and a low 291 (+3) for the final round. The team's three-round score came out to 897 (+33), putting the Rams in a tie for second place with Northern Arizona.

To break the tie, a scorecard playoff was held by comparing the fifth-place score of the third round. Colorado State senior Natalie Stone had the high score of the round with a 77, which was three strokes higher than that of Northern Arizona, putting the Rams in third place out of 23 teams.

"We shot a 291 which I thought was a respectful number for today," commented Head Coach Angie Hopkins. "Unfortunately, we missed second place by three strokes. It was still a good confidence booster for all of us. Right now, everybody is playing good and that's what we need. We really want to go into the conference championship playing strong and right now we are in the best shape we've been in going into the championship."

Texas El Paso won the tournament with a score of 883 (+19). Stephanie Kim of Northern Arizona placed first individually with a score of 216 (E).

Rams sophomore Brianna Espinoza had the top finish for the team with a tie for fifth place, the best finish of her career. Espinoza shot a 73 (+1) during the first round, a 75 (+3) during the second and a 72 (E) during the third, tying her season-low score. She had a three-round total of 220 (+4). Senior Kasey Claussen finished tied for ninth after shooting an even 72 during the last round. She had a total score of 222 (+6).

Sophomore Melissa Martin finished tied for 13th. She shot a 73 (+1) during the third round, giving her a total score of 225 (+9). Stone finished tied for 39th with a score of 233 (+17). Freshman Emily Roering finished tied for 42nd with a score of 234 (+18). Freshman Cecilie Krefting, who competed as an individual, finished tied for 75th with a score of 243 (+27).

"Brianna and Kasey started off with birdies today," added Hopkins. "That just kind of led the way. I was really impressed with Kasey, Emily and Melissa. They really came through for us today. Emily was not putting well, so for her to manage a 74 was really helpful for us."

Next up, Colorado State will compete in the Mountain West Conference championship April 15-17.
