FORT COLLINS, Colo. – On the heels of a spectacular regular season and conference championship, the CSU men’s golf team received another award Wednesday as it prepares for the upcoming NCAA regional.

Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear Academic Performance Rates. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

“This is an outstanding honor,” commented Head Coach Jamie Bermel. “It shows that our program is committed to excellence both in the classroom and on the golf course. I’m really proud of our guys for all the hard work they put in this year in both areas.”

Background on APR Public Recognition Announcement

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Based on their most recent multiyear Academic Progress Rates, 841 teams have earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards, up from 767 teams last year. The awards are given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their APRs. The 841 teams publicly recognized this year for high achievement represent 13.4 percent of the 6,297 eligible Division I teams.

All-conference awards

After winning the second conference championship in CSU history and third-career conference title, Bermel was tabbed as the 2009-10 Mountain West Coach of the Year for the third time in his career following the Rams' championship run.

Seniors Riley Arp, Bryce Hanstad and junior Ryan Peterson all made the MWC all-conference team. Arp, a Fort Collins native, led the Rams with a low-round score in three tournaments this season, helping CSU to a first place finish and a win at the PVCC Dual in February. Hanstad led Colorado State in two tournaments this season, including a first-place finish in the Cougar Classic in late April, giving the team momentum and confidence heading into the MWC championships. Peterson came up big when it mattered most for the Rams. He captured his first tournament win at the Mountain West championships with a personal best low-round score of 65. Peterson is the first golfer to place first individually in the championship since Martin Laird in 2002.
