TUCSON, Ariz. – Led by the efforts of Ryan Peterson and Zahkai Brown, Colorado State shot to the lead in the first day of the Mountain West Conference championship.

Though both golfers’ rounds were hurt by the dreaded 18th hole on the Catalina Course of Tucson National, Brown and Peterson turned in 70s (-1) for their first rounds. Brown’s day was highlighted by a 3-under-par back nine, consisting of an eagle and three birdies. Peterson, on the other hand, started off in strong fashion, with four birdies on the first 11 holes.

While Brown and Peterson are currently tied with two others for the individual lead, the Rams are all alone in the driver’s seat, two strokes ahead of No. 25 San Diego State. If the team is able to hold on for two more days, it will claim its second Mountain West title, first since 2008.

Head Coach Jamie Bermel was excited to have two golfers atop the leader board.

“Both of them played well today, but neither was able to finish,” Bermel said. “I didn’t see a lot of Ryan because I was with Zahkai all day, but I think he was chipping and putting pretty well.”

A true testament to the difficulty of this course, Riley Arp stands only one stroke away from the leaders with an even-par 71. Arp eagled Hole 10 and had two birdies on the day, but lost the tournament lead with a double-bogey on Hole 18.

Dustin Morris is also in the hunt. Morris had an up-and-down round but ended the day with a 72 (+1), in a tie for 14th. Despite being one of only two to birdie Hole 18 Thursday, Bryce Hanstad finished with a 2-over-par 73.

Bermel believes the team can continue its good play Friday and Saturday through the next two rounds of the tournament.

“We have two more rounds,” Bermel explained. “We just need to keep doing what we’re doing, get a little better, and we should be fine.”
