Track & field recap: Rams' Hemphill places 7th in final

EUGENE, Ore. – Colorado State’s Kristen Hemphill was seventh to cross the finish line in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2010 NCAA track & field championships Saturday. The senior clocked a time of 10 minutes, 7.40 seconds.
A seventh place finish gives Hemphill an all-American title. All-American awards are given to the top eight finishers.
“She’s going to end her career an all-American,” said distance coach Bryan Berryhill. “It was a very good race for her. She had a very solid preliminary round and final round. Very few people get to end their careers as all-Americans. She worked very hard and certainly earned it.”
Hemphill’s time at the championships was the second-best performance of her career, and it also ranks second in CSU’s record books. The native of Los Alamos, N.M., set school records twice this season in the steeplechase. She now owns five of the top six times in Rams’ history.
Penn State’s Bridget Franek won the race, topping both a personal best and the top time in the nation this season by almost 10 seconds. She finished the race at 9:38.86, a full 13 seconds ahead of second place finisher Emma Coburn from Colorado (9:51.86). Ashley Higginson of Princeton placed third (9:52.73), Sarah Pease of Indiana took fourth (9:56.91), Shalaya Kipp from Colorado finished fifth (9:59.37) and Providence’s Shelby Greany finished sixth (10:00.88).
