FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Coming off its most successful season under Head Coach Tim Miles, the Colorado State men’s basketball team is poised to take the next step toward becoming a perennial postseason contender in 2010-11.
The Rams, who closed the 2009-10 campaign with a 16-16 record including a berth in the 2010 College Basketball Invitational, will look to take the next step beginning this fall. That path became clearer Friday with the announcement of the team’s schedule for the upcoming season.
Led by a strong senior class that features second-team all-district and all-MWC performer Andy Ogide, The Rams will begin the new campaign with seven of their first 10 contests – including a pair of exhibition games (Nov. 2 vs. Regis, Nov. 6 vs. Western State) – in the friendly confines of Moby Arena.
CSU’s lone road trips in the first month-and-a-half of the season include short drives to face in-state rivals Denver (Nov. 18 at Magness Arena) and Colorado (Dec. 8 at Coors Events Center), plus a nationally televised (ESPN2) showdown against perennial power Kansas at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., on Dec. 11.
CSU opens its regular-season schedule Nov. 13 vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and follows its tilt at DU playing host to the Sam Houston State Bearkats (Nov. 27), in the first contest of a three-game homestand. The Rams make the first of at least 19 televised dates Dec. 1 live on The Mtn. against the Drake Bulldogs as part of the second-annual Mountain West/Missouri Valley Challenge. Western Athletic Conference foe Fresno State then visits Moby Arena for a Dec. 4 matchup.
After back-to-back road contests against Big 12 opponents Colorado and Kansas, the Rams close out their non-conference home schedule against in-state rival Northern Colorado, Dec. 20 at Moby Arena.
The Rams will spend the holiday season south of the border competing in the inaugural Cancun Governor’s Cup. The ESPN-run tournament features eight teams – Appalachian State, CSU, East Tennessee State, Northeastern, Ole Miss, Saint Louis, Southern Miss and Texas State – all of which accepted 2010 postseason berths except Texas State.
Colorado State faces off against Appalachian State in the final game of the opening round, Dec. 22 at 6:30 p.m. MT, with the winner advancing to the second round to take on the winner of the Ole Miss vs. Texas State matchup. That second-round game will be broadcast on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m. MT on Dec. 23. The championship game is slated for a 7 p.m. MT tip on Dec. 24, and will be televised live on ESPN2, giving the Rams an opportunity for at least two more nationally televised contests.
CSU wraps up its non-conference slate Dec. 28-Jan. 1 at the Hilltop Classic hosted by the University of San Francisco. Also competing in the tournament are Dominican University and Hampton University. The Rams’ tournament schedule for the Hilltop Classic has yet to be released.
Colorado State’s conference slate opens in exciting fashion with a home matchup against Border War rival Wyoming on Jan. 4. It marks the second straight year that the Rams open against their rivals to the north. The MWC slate will include a pair of dates against two teams – New Mexico and BYU – that finished the 2009-10 campaign ranked 16th and 22nd, respectively, in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top-25 poll.
The Rams finished fifth in the league in 2009-10, behind BYU, New Mexico, San Diego State and UNLV, all of which competed in the NCAA tournament, establishing a conference record with four teams.
The Rams will also play two dates each against rival Air Force, TCU and Utah, in the Utes’ final season as a member of the Mountain West Conference.
All of CSU’s Mountain West Conference dates will be televised live, including three contests – Feb. 2 vs. San Diego State, Feb. 5 at Wyoming and March 2 vs. Utah – which will air nationally on CBS College Sports. All other MWC games will air on The Mtn.
The Conoco Mountain West Conference Championships are slated for March 9-12 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev.
