PROVO, Utah. - The CSU women's tennis team kicked off the fall portion of its 2010-11 schedule Thursday morning at the BYU Invitational, tallying several victories despite an injury suffered by senior Melissa Holzinger.
The Rams will see both Tori Arneson and newcomer Lauren Pick fight their way to the finals in the main draw of Brackets A and B.
In the singles A bracket, Arneson made the quarterfinals and will match up against Utah State’s Jaci West to secure a position in the semifinals. While in the singles B bracket, Pick made a stand against the Cougars’ Justine Gallacci, 6-0, 7-6(5), advancing to the semifinals. Pick will battle Utah State’s Taylor Perry Friday morning for a slot at the finals.
“Lauren was also able to come up from behind,” said Head Coach Jon Messick. “For a freshman that was down, to come back was a good indication of the future.”
Holzinger also earned her first victory of the season in the first round against Wyoming’s Sasa Nemcova, 6-2,6-3, but fell in the second round to Utah State’s Jaci West after suffering an injury to her back during the second set of the match.
“Melissa had back troubles; she had a good first good round and was in too much pain to continue,” said Messick. “We are going to let her rest so that she will be ready for our home tournament next weekend.”
Despite winning only three matches in the main draw at the BYU Invitational (singles only) on Thursday, the Rams saw potential in its newcomers, which proved even more in the consolation round.
Newcomers Pick and Kaitlin Wooldridge began the doubles bracket with a win in the first round against Utah State’s Kimmi Watts and Whitney White, 8-1, but lost to Brigham Young’s Callie Craig and Megan Price in the second round, 8-2.
“We worked in new players with the doubles combination's and didn’t know what to expect,” said Messick. “Lauren and Kaitlin competed really well and lost close matches that could have gone either way. For doubles teams that haven’t played together I thought they played well.”
The Rams return to action for Day 2 of the Invitational at 10 a.m. on Friday. For more information and to view results, click here.
