Tennis recap: Rams conclude Day 2 of BYU Invite

PROVO, Utah - The Colorado State women's tennis team finished Day 2 at the BYU Invitational Friday, advancing Kaley Schultz and Veronika Wojakowska into the semifinals of the consolation `A' bracket.
Schultz, a freshman, won her first match of the day against Utah State's Monica Abella, 6-0, 6-1, then went on to tally another win against CSU teammate Caitlin Fluegge due to an injury suffered by Fluegge in the first set.
After advancing to the quarterfinals due to an injury suffered Thursday by Melissa Holzinger, the Rams' Veronika Wojakowska had a strong day of match play against Wyoming's Carly Von Hollen, winning 7-6 (2), 6-0.
"Kaley as a freshman is having a good tournament," said Head Coach Jon Messick. "She won two matches today, and will play tomorrow against Veronika, who is also playing at a good level. Both girls will be battling for a slot in the backdraw finals. We would like to see whoever wins that match to have a good showing in the finals."
Kaitlin Wooldridge made the finals of her singles bracket before falling 6-0, 6-0, to a tough opponent, Kristi Russell of Weber State. Also in singles, Lauren Mulhern, after battling three sets to make the second round on Thursday, fell to Utah State's Hailey Swenson 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
"Overall we were not as competitive today," Messick said. "Every match we played today was a winnable match. For whatever reason we did not play with the same intensity as yesterday. We just have to get into a better mindset competitively and develop a little more confidence for our home tournament next week."
