FORT WORTH, Texas - A glimpse at a comeback wasn't enough to deplete a large deficit Saturday afternoon as the Rams fells to the TCU Horned Frogs 66-40 at Daniel Meyer-Coliseum.
The Rams (8-8, 1-2 Mountain West) were down early, not scoring their first points until the 16:33 mark and they quickly fell into a 22-point deficit, but sophomores Meixandra Porter and Chantel Kennedy kept CSU in the game, cutting the margin to 13 points by the end of the first half. Porter brought CSU back with a team-high 12 points, while Kennedy had eight rebounds and five steals in the contest.
"We're too reactionary in games," commented Head Coach Kristen Holt. "We've got to get better starts.
"We had that run. I was proud of the way that we fought back. I thought that Chantel was awesome. She created a lot of deflections."
Colorado State committed six turnovers in less than 3 minutes to start the contest, ending the first half with 17, and a season-high 31 through all 40 minutes. The Frogs (12-6, 4-0) were victims of sloppy play as well though, with 24 turnovers of their own, but their .467 field-goal percentage proved to be the game changer, including 36 points off the Rams' turnovers.
Junior Kim Mestdagh had just six points on the afternoon, and is now just 18 points away from 1,000. When she achieves the milestone, the Belgium native will be the only active junior in the Mountain West with quadruple figures in the points column.
Chatilla van Grinsven was put in the starting lineup for the first time since Dec. 8 at Colorado. Unfortunately she was forced to sit out the majority of the first half with two early fouls, a big loss for CSU with the absence of Kelly Hartig out with a knee injury.
Colorado state will look to bounce back at home vs. UNLV Tuesday in an orange out game, as the Rams will wear Colorado A&M colors. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. MT at Moby Arena and will be broadcast live on The Mtn.
