LARAMIE, Wyo. – An early 13-point deficit was too much to overcome as the Rams fell at Wyoming in the Arena-Auditorium Wednesday night, 83-43.
Wyoming (10-3, 1-0 MWC) began the night with a perfect 4-4 from outside the arc, quickly handing the Rams a 13-point deficit.
Through the first half the Cowgirls shot 48.4 percent with 10 second-chance points, compared to CSU’s 36.7 percent with zero second-chance points.
The Cowgirls opened the second half continuing their 12-0 run before the Rams (7-7, 0-1) finally put up a basket at the 15:42 mark.
“They were very good tonight,” said Head Coach Kristen Holt. “For whatever reason, we are mentally stopping ourselves. We played horrible.”
Nearly every Ram scored in the contest. Sam Martin was the lone player in double figures with 11. She was a perfect 4-4 from the line, hit the Rams’ only three-pointer and had all of the team’s three blocks.
CSU was able to keep its turnovers low, with just 12 on the night. They shot 32.7 percent in the matchup, but it wasn’t enough as the Cowgirls shot 52.6 percent.
Up until the 7-minute mark in the second half, only four players scored for Wyoming, but all four put up at least 16 points. Both Hilary Carlson and Jade Kennedy had double-doubles, and Vandiver was just two rebounds short of a double-double of her own.
Colorado State takes a break with a bye weekend before hosting New Mexico Jan. 12. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m. at Moby Arena.
