ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Rams dug themselves a large hole early in the contest at The Pit, and the deficit was too much to overcome. Colorado State fell to the Lobos 86-53, Saturday afternoon.
CSU is now 12-11, and 5-5 in conference play, tying Utah for the fourth-place spot. The Lobos improved to 9-13 overall and 3-7 in the Mountain West.
The Lobos had 14 points off the Rams’ nine turnovers through the first half. Freshman Jasmine Patterson was nearly unstoppable from three-point range. She shot 6-of-8 and tallied 18 points in the first stanza, helping create CSU’s 23-point first-half shortfall.
“We couldn’t get our offense on track for a long time,” commented Head Coach Kristen Holt. “If I had one word to describe what I saw from the beginning, I thought we were soft. We didn’t have much aggression. I thought we were getting knocked off the ball. Our post players were getting shoved out of the lane. I was disappointed that we didn’t fight back.”
Junior Kim Mestdagh scored a team-high 20 points, hitting three from beyond the arc. It was her sixth game with at least 20 points this season.
Meixandra Porter got her second start of the season Saturday in place of fellow sophomore Chantel Kennedy. It was also the first game that freshman Sam Martin was not in the starting five this season due to being sick earlier in the week.
Martin came in shortly after the game began and played 15 minutes in the first half despite having two fouls. She still tied a career high with three blocks on the afternoon, and also recorded 10 points and tied a team-high seven rebounds with Hayley Thompson.
CSU saw its largest crowd of the season with 7,753 fans cheering for New Mexico.
Colorado State will head home for a rematch vs. TCU on Wednesday. Tipoff vs. the Frogs is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT at Moby Arena.
