FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State held Air Force scoreless for the opening 3 minutes and Sam Martin posted 21 points and 10 rebounds en route to a 70-49 win Saturday at Moby Arena.
The conquest ends a five-game losing streak for the Rams (13-14, 6-8 Mountain West), the longest line of losses CSU has endured this season. The victory also gives CSU one more conference win than the Rams’ total last season, when they finished with a 5-11 record in MWC play. With two regular-season games remaining, the Rams aim to further improve that record. With the loss, Air Force (8-19, 3-11 MWC) is now fighting with UNLV for an eighth-place standing.
“It feels great after a five-game losing streak,” said Junior Kim Mestdagh of the victory. “We came together as a team.”
CSU came away with the win despite shooting only 39.3 percent from the floor. But top performances by Mestdagh and freshman Sam Martin kept the Rams in the game. Mestdagh was the team’s leading scorer with 26 points, her most ever in a conference game, and seven rebounds. Martin’s 21 points also were her most in a conference game, to go along with her second double-double in a row. Both players shot 50.0 percent from the field in less than 30 minutes of play.
“Coach told me to shoot more,” said Martin. “We do what we have to do. We had a good warmup. We were in a good mood and it was fun.”
The Rams posted a new season-low in turnovers, committing only nine on the afternoon. In conjunction with 18 assists, the Rams flip-flopped numbers with the Falcons, who posted nine assists and 18 turnovers. CSU’s Hayley Thompson also recorded a career high in assists, dishing out five.
“It was a good day for us to get a much-needed win,” said Head Coach Kristen Holt. “We want to control our destiny.”
The Rams now prepare to travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they will take on the Utah Utes, an opponent with whom CSU is currently tied for fifth place in conference standings, Wednesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST at the Huntsman Center.
