FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Fifteen members of the Colorado State track and field program that reached regional-qualifying marks this season will participate in the NCAA West regional meet May 26-28, held at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore.
“I really think the qualifiers show the balance that we are trying to create with our team,” commented Head Coach Brian Bedard. “Our staff makes an effort to recruit all event areas, and the group we have going to the first round of the NCAA’s is a balance of sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws and distance. We have five freshman headed to the meet to get valuable experience while competing in a high caliber meet. That’s exciting for the future of our program. It means we are recruiting the right kids and they are getting better in our program.”
Field and running events will be held each day beginning Thursday at 11 a.m. MT, while the finals in all running events will take place Friday and Saturday. The top five finishers in each event advance to the NCAA championships, June 8-11 at Drake University, in Des Moines, Iowa, along with several others in each event that have the best marks in the country but did not qualify at their respective regional meet.
Senior Tyson Williams leads the pack, qualifying in both the shot put and discus throwing events. He earned the Rams’ highest seed (13) in the shot put, with a throw of 59 feet, 10.25 inches at the Mountain West Track & Field championships last week. He also grabbed the 47th spot in the men’s discus with a throw of 172-0.
On the women’s side freshman Jessica Sharbono took CSU’s top seed (19) in the discus with a throw of 172-3 at the Mesa Classic on April 8.
Results will be available at GoDucks.com at the conclusion of the meet.
