FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Fifteen members of the Colorado State track and field program that reached regional-qualifying marks this season will participate in the NCAA West regional meet beginning Thursday, held at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore.
“I really think the qualifiers show the balance that we are trying to create with our team,” commented Head Coach Brian Bedard. “Our staff makes an effort to recruit all event areas, and the group we have going to the first round of the NCAAs is a balance of sprints, hurdles, jumps, throws and distance. We have five freshmen headed to the meet to get valuable experience while competing in a high-caliber meet. That’s exciting for the future of our program. It means we are recruiting the right kids and they are getting better in our program.”
Field and running events will be held each day beginning Thursday at 11 a.m. MT, while the finals in all running events will take place Friday and Saturday. The top five finishers in each event advance to the NCAA championships, June 8-11 at Drake University, in Des Moines, Iowa, along with several others in each event that have the best marks in the country but did not qualify at their respective regional meet.
Senior Tyson Williams leads the pack, qualifying in both the shot put and discus throwing events. He earned the Rams’ highest seed (13) in the shot put, with a throw of 59 feet, 10.25 inches at the Mountain West Track & Field Championships last week. He also grabbed the 47th spot in the men’s discus with a throw of 172-0.

Cameron Carter and Ian Lettow give CSU two more throwers, competing in the discus and shot put, respectively.
Seth Monson, who recorded the conference’s fourth-best 400-meter time of the season, qualified in 47.29 seconds. Trevor Brown and Kelby Dias will each compete in the 110-meter hurdles after having dominating seasons in the event. Brown and Dias qualified with respective times of 14.35 and 14.31, which rank as second and third best in the MWC this season.
Freshman Seth Butler will experience his first NCAA regional, entering the weekend with a qualifying time of 1:49.75 in the 800-meter run. Spenser Lynass and Jake Keyser prepare to run in the men’s 3,000 meters. Lynass and Keyser had season-best times of 8:51.10 and 9:00.07, respectively. Andrew Roberts competes in his first NCAA regional, with a qualifying time of 29:57.24 in the 10,000-meter run.
On the women’s side freshman Jessica Sharbono took CSU’s top seed (19) in the discus with a throw of 172-3 at the Mesa Classic on April 8.
Nicole Peters’ season-best time of 10:32.69 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase earned her a spot in the regional. Kaitlin Hanenburg joins Peters in the steeplechase after qualifying in 10:42.66. Cate Brus will represent the Rams in the high jump, qualifying with a mark of 5-08. Kenisha Thorughsingh rounds out the CSU competitors by qualifying in the hammer throw with a mark of 180-11.
Results will be available at GoDucks.com at the conclusion of the meet.
