CSU's Martin earns spot on preseason all-MW team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado State’s Sam Martin was selected to the Mountain West’s preseason all-conference team and the women's basketball squad was tabbed to finish seventh in the preseason poll. The standings were released Tuesday morning.
Martin, a three-time all-conference recipient, averaged team-highs 12.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest last year, becoming only the second player in Rams’ history to reach 1,000 career points, 500 boards and 100 blocks before her senior season. This is her first preseason honor.
Fresno State, the 2013 MW tournament champion, was picked as the preseason favorite. The Bulldogs received 17 first-place votes and 238 total points. Wyoming was picked second with four first-place votes, with the Preseason Player of the Year, Kayla Woodward. San Diego State, the 2013 regular season champion, was picked to finish third, earning two first-place votes. New Mexico placed fourth, while UNLV earned two first-place votes for fifth place. Conference newcomer Utah State took the sixth place spot, followed by Colorado State, Boise State, MW newcomer San Jose State, Nevada and Air Force.
With so many newcomers to the Rams on the roster, head coach Ryun Williams and his team are looking to shock their conference foes in their 2013-14 campaign. With the return of senior Sam Martin and all-conference honoree Caitlin Duffy, CSU will look to improve on last season's 11-19 finish.
The team opens exhibition play vs. Colorado School of Mines on Oct. 28. The Rams took on the Orediggers for their exhibition match last season with a 61-48 win. Non-conference play will begin on Nov. 8 in a double-header vs. UCCS with the men’s team.
