LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Wednesday was the first day of the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships held at Fertitta Tennis Complex on UNLV’s campus.
The tournament opened up with doubles action and juniors Natalie Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska faced off against Utah’s Sarah Richter and Luisa Gerstner da Rosa. The Rams and Utes were tied at 5-5 until Richter and Gerstner da Rosa pulled away at the end to win 8-5.
In the afternoon, the event transitioned into singles play and both Heffron and Wojakowska failed to advance in the single-elimination tournament.
Heffron was defeated 6-0, 6-1 by Idaho’s Vicky Lozano and Wojakowska lost 7-6, 6-3 to Mountain West rival Iren Kotseva from UNLV.
“When you are given opportunities you have to make the most of them,” Head Coach Jon Messick said. “That has to be in their head as we enter spring. They’re working hard in practice and getting better but in the matches they’re just not sustaining it the way they need to. “
After a break, the Rams season will pick back up on Feb. 1 as they travel to Boulder to face the University of Colorado.
