Men's basketball recap: Rams fall late to Lobos

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State Rams (21/22) had their 27-game home win streak snapped on Saturday, after falling to the New Mexico Lobos (16/16) in front of a sold out crowd at Moby Arena, 91-82.
With the loss, the Rams (21-6, 8-4 MW) fall two games behind the Lobos (23-4, 10-2 MW) in the conference standings with four games remaining.
"The tougher team won, I'll give New Mexico all of the credit," Head Coach Larry Eustachy said. "We've got a lot of hard work ahead of us, but I believe in these guys and I know they believe in me. I believe they will respond."
With the game featuring the two best teams in the Mountain West, both squads made sure to put on a show for their national audience. Much of the game was played in see-saw fashion, with neither team able to separate themselves by more than just a couple of possessions. The game also featured 10 ties and six lead changes.
Senior center Colton Iverson paved the way for the Rams scoring 26 points and pulling down 15 rebounds, while senior guards Wes Eikmeier and Dorian Green both scored at least 20 points as well.
As a team, Colorado State pounded the offensive glass, grabbing 20 offensive rebounds which it turned into 26 second chance points. The Lobos countered CSU's physical presence inside with some spectacular play from its perimeter players, in particular junior guard Kendall Williams.
Williams made 10 of his 13 three-point attempts to set a Mountain West record, and notched 46 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists. His 46 points rank as the fifth most in Mountain West history, and is a Moby Arena record.
"We just gave him open looks early," Eikmeier said of Williams. "He got hot and then was just feeling it the rest of the night."
Redshirt sophomore center Alex Kirk notched a double-double for the Lobos with 19 points and 10 rebounds. New Mexico ended the game on a 27-12 run.
Colorado State will host Fresno State next on Wednesday. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. MT.
