DAVIS, Calif.—The Colorado State Rams began the first day of the Aggie Shootout 1-1, picking up a big conference victory over Sonoma State, 11-8.
“We had a great team effort,” associated head coach Mike Moody said. “I’m really pleased with how we played, and how we executed our game plan.”
New this year, each Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) team will play seven predetermined conference games.
“There are only seven WWPA games, and that’s how our conference tournament seed will be determined, so each one is important,” Moody said.
The Rams (3-7, 1-0 WWPA) had a strong start, scoring two goals within the first 2 minutes of the contest, and led 4-0 after the first period. Despite a comeback attempt by Sonoma State—the Seawolves (7-9) cut the score to 5-4 midway through the second—CSU responded with three straight goals to make it 10-6 going into the final period.
“We had a little bit of a slump in the second period, but came out strong after halftime and put the game away,” Moody said.
Freshman Ariel Arcidiacono again paced the Rams, tallying six goals, which ties a single-game program record. She also had six goals in a contest two weeks ago. In the cage, junior Michelle Slagle had 13 stops.
“Ariel had another huge game for us,” Moody said. “She really came up big for us, like she has all year, and Michelle also had a monster game.
In the nightcap, CSU faced host and 14th-ranked UC Davis (8-7), dropping the decision, 13-6.
The Rams trailed by three, 6-3, at halftime, but allowed four third-period goals. Scoring for CSU was Kelcy Barott (2), Kelsey Carrigan (2), Arcidiacono and Stephanie Weed. Senior Melissa Fisher had eight saves in goal.
The Aggie Shootout continues Sunday, with games against Santa Clara (10 a.m. MT) and Concordia (2:45 p.m.). CSU’s game against Santa Clara will be the Rams’ second WWPA game of the season.
“We have to play like we did this morning, and beat two more tough teams,” Moody said. “I’m excited to see how our team responds.”
